Coming of Night

23 Snowfall (December 21)

The Coming of Night marks the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It is typically celebrated very soberly, even by those communities who do not actively worship the Raven Queen – death is a serious matter to most, and many people do not wish to upset the goddess in charge of it.

Most celebrations revolve around serious examination of the past year’s activities, focusing on whether those actions have prepared individuals and the community for the cold, barren months ahead. Some communities, particularly those without strong supporters of the goddess, also have more lively festivals in which pleasanter, warmer days are remembered fondly, and storytelling sessions can last long into the night as villagers relate amusing anecdotes from the past.
